With the explosion of TikTok in 2020, a whole new platform has been opened to musicians. The music that goes viral on TikTok ranges from chart-toppers such as Cardi B's WAP, to absolute curveballs like Sudno, by Belarusian cold wave trio, Molchat Doma.
Despite this apparent unpredictability, we were still curious to know: is there a formula for TikTok success? What about the viral hits on TikTok in 2020 that we can learn from and build upon for possible success in 2021? To attempt to answer this question, we analysed the Spotify playlist, "TikTok Greatest Hits". Here are our findings:
Amongst the genres, Hip Hop and Trap reigned supreme, making up the majority of primary and secondary genres.
The biggest moods featured were "powerful" and "quirky" which seem to reflect two of the biggest types of TikTok trends: dance and comedic challenges.
Interestingly, medium Energy and middle of the road tempo (105-145 BPM) were prominent features of the large majority of successful tracks on the platform.
Over 90% of TikTok hits featured vocals, which were evenly split amongst male and female.
