AI has long been a buzzword in music production. AI-selected presets, mixing tools and mastering have all been available to producers for several years. But, by using AI designed for music discovery, rather than tools designed for production, some producers are already enhancing tracks, making more informed production decisions and finding new listeners.

AI tagging in post-production

Austin-based music producer Bandeauxx is one such artist. Specialising in hip-hop with electronic/EDM influences, he uses Musiio’s free AI tagging tool in post-production as a second, objective listener that can describe how a human audience would interpret a track’s mood, key, tempo, genre and more.

He explains: “Usually, the music I make doesn’t fit current genre definitions; an AI can help me see what my music is like from an outside perspective and how someone would discover it.”

This is true of Bandeauxx’s 2021 EP titled Coastal, which blended hip-hop with reggaeton and dancehall rhythms. Because the music doesn’t fit neatly into one genre, Musiio helped the producer understand where the music could find an audience.

Musiio’s AI-driven music tagging system has helped Bandeauxx identify and refine his tracks and improved his overall workflow.

“I appreciate Musiio’s commitment to ease-of-use,” says Bandeauxx of the tagging tool’s simple drag-and-drag interface.

Importantly, for Bandeauxx, this new, straightforward workflow means more time to focus on the music and less time worrying about organising and tagging tracks for discoverability.

Real-time production feedback

Producers can also leverage AI tagging technology during the production process. By uploading a track for AI analysis and tagging mid-production, producers can evaluate how new production elements, like drum parts or synths, affect the track’s mood, energy, genre and more.

Example A - This chill lo-fi track works, but medium-energy focus playlists get more listens, so the producers can try a slightly more energetic drum pattern.
Example B - With this new drum pattern, we have increased the track’s energy and changed the mood composition. There’s no longer a Soulful tag, but instead an Optimistic tag – ideal for motivational focus playlists. This is now exactly in the sweet spot.

Whether producers get Musiio tagging data during production or once a track is complete, it’s information they can act on. Balancing the insights provided by Musiio’s AI technology with innate human intuition and artistic instincts is simple, according to Bandeauxx.

“The question I ask is ‘does this seem like I got what I wanted across to a potential listener?’ If it doesn’t seem like I achieved what I set out to do, I either accept that I’ve made a whole new thing or revise where the song or piece is at.”

As AI technologies like Musiio Tag evolve and become more integrated into music production workflows, producers like Bandeauxx and others stand to reap significant benefits. By staying up-to-date with advancements in AI-driven music analysis and learning to use these tools effectively, producers can make more informed creative decisions, and better understand their target audience.

Bandeauxx: “I would say, come in with an open mind and clear attitude, knowing that these tools are made to help you and organise your process. If you can use Microsoft Word or Google Docs, there is nothing to worry about from AI tools and services like Musiio.”
