This is Funk vs Funk, where I use Musiio’s tagging results to match up:
• Funk on Funk
• Funk to Funk
• Funkin’ for Funk’s Sake

The first thing that I would like to do is give some Honorable Mentions to some Funk Groups and Artists that I was unable to mention in Parts 1 & 2. Please do lookup and research these people, go to their performances (when possible), join/follow their news letters and YouTube channels and other social media pages.
HONORABLE FUNK MENTIONS – (in no particular order)
The James Brown Band – (All Band Incarnations) The Brothers Johnson Faze-O Zapp & Roger Curtis Mayfield Lynn Collins Kool & The Gang Mike Clark Bobby Byrd Dr. John Fred Thomas Bernard Odum Mtume Betty Davis Ready For The World Ndugu Chancler | The Time Graham Central Station Sharon Jones Vicky Anderson War Chic Galactic Clyde Stubblefield John Jabo Starks Melvin Parker Nate Jones Victor Wooten Me’shell Ndegeocello The JB’s Heatwave Terence Higgins & Swamp Grease | The S.O.S. This is FUNK vs FUNK!
But none of these Artists or Songs are competing against one another.
They are all great! (And Funky!)
These are just some of my favorites that I want to match up and tag with Musiio for your listening pleasure.
WARNING! – THIS IS NOT THE NORMAL BLOG!
If you’re in your office be prepared to start an unscheduled office party filled with some of the best booty shaken, head boppin’, get up, move and groove music that’s gonna Funk your ear holes and leave a stain on your ear drums.

Starting off with two of my JB favorites, here’s a version of “I Feel Good” that you may not have heard before. . . But – I LOVE IT!
Musiio’s results for both songs share the “Exciting” tag and 100% FUNK along with Happy and Powerful respectively.
James Brown was known as The Godfather Of Soul and Musiio sure picked that for “Mother Popcorn“.
JAMES BROWN –
I Feel Good (Funky Version)

“I Got The Feelin’” was one of my JB favorites to play live on stage. Here are two versions.
Musiio was able to pickup on differences between both versions.
The Funk qualifier can never be denied where James Brown is concerned, but I would have given the live version more energy. Would you believe that JB still carried much of that energy well into his 70’s? I’m a 7 year eyewitness to it.

That New Orleans Funk Flavor is something no one should go without. Musiio gives up the 100% FUNK for both of these classic Meter’s songs. They also are sharing that HAPPY vibe that I know you must be feeling.
If you’re a Led Zeppelin fan (as I am), you may or may not know that those guys loved FUNK. Take a fresh listen to some of their songs such as The Lemon Song, Good Times, Bad Times, Black Dog, Custard Pie and others to find the Funk. Put them into Musiio’s Tagger and see what you get.
THE METERS –

THE METERS –

The JB’s The Grunt is another favorite of mine that heavy hittin’! Things & Do take me back to that classic 70’s sound that was on the radio, television and the big screen. Both of these songs demonstrate the amazing skills of the musicians performing them. Musiio captured the bar that was set so high from these musicians with the 100% Funk results. That’s pure.
maybe Elements of 70’s Movie Soundtrack could be another tag for the future.

The Funk just keeps on keeping on with classic Sly & the Family Stone’s two killer Funk songs with Musiio giving up the 100% Funk results and catching all the Soul that this group gave out in their recordings. And of course those famous bass lines by Rustee Allen and Larry Graham are what Musiio picked up on with the Bass Guitar in its Instruments results.

Now . . . going from Classic Funk to Modern Funk and back again we look at The JB’s and Lettuce. With no doubt in its cybertronic brain, Musiio dishes out the 100% Funk results. It also picks up all the relevant instruments with all the classic JB’s elements and Adam Deitch’s prominent and solid drum groove. Although it may have missed some pretty killer horn parts on Get Greasy.

Let’s not forget some of the Ladies of Funk. Ms. Marva Whitney couldn’t have asked for better recording and producing backup with James Brown and his musicians. Of course Musiio will give the 100% Funk result. And Ms. Me’shell Ndegeocello is steeped in Funk as she takes it and mixes with modern flavors. Musiio catches this with the Neo Soul Tag.
There are many more Ladies of Funk throughout our times. Do a bit of research and find your favorites.

Me’Shell Ndegéocello –

This time starting with Modern Funk with New Orleans Funky Drummer Terence Higgin’s Gotta Get Swampy, then moving back in time to Parliament’s PFunk Wants To Get Funked Up . . . WooooooWeeee!
Now . . . Notice the Genre Tags for Gotta Get Swampy. What Musiio has just picked out is also known as Go-Go. Chocoate City in the house y’all!
Musiio all picks up on the undeniable influence that George Clinton and his musicians had on Hip-Hop giving the Elements and Alternative Hip-Hop Tags.

Here’s The Gap Band’s Outstanding (1982) and Earth Wind & Fire’s Africano (1975). Although the time span isn’t a wide and some of the other match ups in this section, the instrument sounds and feel of the Funk is why I put these two songs together.
What also ties these two groups together for this section is that The Erik Hargrove Band (EHB) actually covered the song Outstanding when they supported Al McKay’s Earth Wind and Fire Experience.
Along with Musiio’s Funk Tags, it picks up on what both these groups have in common . . . BRASS!

For Funk Sake . . . I’ve Funked you up so much already. But, there’s no stopping The Funk y’all!
Find your 3rd gear as you’ve got to dance some more with Lakeside and Midnight Star.
Musiio gives up the Funk and some Disco. It’s all Positive, Happy and Energetic. Keep going!

MIDNIGHT STAR –

YES . . . 100% Funk and as I’m typing these titles, I’m dancing in my seat without any music playing. That’s how powerfully Funky these songs are. Musiio says Positive and Happy. I don’t know about the Relaxed Tag because I’m dancin’ y’all!!!

That’s right . . . Mr. George Clinton is back again. Fatback too with Musiio’s ONE HUNDRED PERCENT FUNK! And ya know it!
Factoid: Singer Gary “Mudbone” Cooper played drums on Atomic Dog. The normal drummer during this time was the famous Dennis Chambers.

Your Funk collection will never function without having the group Con Funk Shun in it.
For this song, I’m surprised that Elements of Disco didn’t come up though and Brass missing from L.T.D. No matter . . . The Funk is the baseline!

Ahhh . . . Prince and Ms. Betty Davis (Another Lady of Funk). POWERHOUSES! 100% FUNK POWERHOUSES!
I’m not too sure on the Ska Tag for Calhoun Square. I might have said Elements of Rock.
And yes, those Electric Guitars, Bass and Drums are all so present on both these recordings.

Is there a doctor in the house? Dr. Funkenstein will you Funked right away!
And . . . a Bone Specialist in his own right and before there was Trombone Shorty, there was Big Sam out of New Orleans! He’s got his own Funky Nation.

Gettin’ Down on Soul Train we have The Gapp Band and The Bar-Kays. I bet Musiio would love to have their volumes of music . . . who wouldn’t? Maybe the 100% Funk tags, Brass and Bass guitar for both these classics will entice them.
GAPP BAND –

BAR-KAYS –

WHAT TIME IS IT??? Time to get your Funk on. The drum groove for 777-9311 is one many a drummer has tried their luck at. It’s said that this beat was stock in the LINN Drum Presets and was programed by Tower of Power’s drummer David Garibaldi. Prince is also said to play guitar on this song. Musiio tags both Percussion and Guitar for it.
And . . . we give it up to a Modern Lady of Funk with Judith Hill’s The pepper Club with Musiio confirming she is 100% Funk. And did you know she was also produced by Prince?
